Abstract
This paper presents an intelligent computer tool that relies on an integration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Case-Based Reasoning (CBR). It is an application that handles past cases represented in Virtual Reality (VR) and aims at providing training and learning. This tool holds representations of fielded past experiences, which are represented in an interactive graphical display, allowing users to gain their learning from. This work involves aspects of research in such domains as CBR, Computer-Based Training (CBT), and VR. CBR plays its role by providing the foundations for the development of computer tools that handle representations of past experiences. CBT contributes with aspects involving the efficiency of the training given by the application. Finally, VR brings aspects related to the design of virtual worlds built in a computer architecture that allows access to the attributes of the objects contained in these worlds. A prototype has been developed to demonstrate the usefulness of this research approach. The paper begins by describing the characteristics of this computer tool. A cross check examination against aspects of the construction industry is then performed to identify domains where the application could be most beneficial. The development of the prototype is discussed next, focusing on the process of case design in VR as a training tool. Finally, a training session on the inspection of scaffold Health & Safety regulations is presented and conclusions are drawn.
