About the ARCOM CM Abstracts

Purpose

ARCOM CM Abstracts is a curated and indexed catalogue of construction management research. It holds the metadata (titles, authors, abstracts and keywords) for around 27,000 records. These are the contents of selected refereed journals and doctoral theses from around the world. Every record is indexed against a structured vocabulary of around 7,500 index terms, which have been derived from the vocabulary used by these authors.

The discovery problem

Construction management (CM) is defined here as the application of the social sciences to the construction sector. Of course, the technology and engineering of construction are served well in existing catalogues and indexes. But the management, organizational, economic and social dimensions of the sector are often dissipated in indexes and catalogues that are based on traditional classifications of knowledge. For example, a paper about sociological aspects of design team meetings in a construction project could be classified under sociology, design methods, architectural practice, construction or management.

The vocabulary of CM research depends on words that happen to be widely used in everyday conversation and in the many disciplines applied in this area. Words like construct, build, design, trust, risk, communication; each of these has multiple connotations that are widely applicable and occur in many different disciplines. This explains why CM research can be difficult to discern in search results using the usual tools. A keyword or full text search in online searches returns thousands of records that use the words but are not part of this field..

Generic schemes classify knowledge by scientific discipline, and they are structured for broad areas of study, in relation to all of human knowledge. A subject like CM is a multi-disciplinary application in a specific, empirical field. For an indication of scale, it is interesting to look at the British Library catalogue of nearly 600,000 UK doctoral theses. Our analysis of the titles and abstracts found that around 0.5% of theses are in the purview of CM. Filtering to find those that are indeed in this field is a time-consuming and specialized task.

The discovery problem addressed here is inherent in our vocabulary. It is a characteristic that follows from the nature of the language we use. Research that is difficult to find by its vocabulary needs specific tools.

General search engines are not the answer

A general search engine is designed to return as many results as it can. It finds everything that uses the search terms and leaves judgement about their relevance to the user. The underlying aim of modern search engines is to focus on popularity and frequency. While this may suit high-volume, mainstream topics, it works against a specialist research area. The strategy of general search engines is powerful for many purposes. This catalogue does not compete with them.

The aim here is not to be exhaustive. We draw on a selected range of core journals and, thus, begin with judgement before searches are done, rather than after. By indexing this defined body of work with a controlled vocabulary, a query will return CM research on a topic. In contrast, a search engine returns anything that simply uses these words. This is how the ARCOM CM Abstracts present focused results on any given question. Moreover, from the evidence of this site’s usage statistics, generic search engines like Google Scholar are accessing this catalogue in a way that subtly raises the profile of our research, making it more likely to be accessed by a broader range of people in the long run. This is a subtle but important shift from having a field shaped by popularity to influencing the shape of our field in the results from major search engines.

The coherence of this catalogue is important. The boundaries we have imposed on it relate to three aspects: the journals chosen, the index terms identified and the omission of work ranging across wider journals. This means that the catalogue can never be complete. Comprehensiveness is not as important as offering a clear entry point into the literature. This improves the odds of ultimately finding the right research and provides a more useful starting point for new research or for a practitioner’s question.

The organization of the catalogue

The catalogue is based on index terms and these are classified into three related structures.

Subjects are the academic lenses brought to bear on those problems: more than 500 disciplinary specialisms, from economics and law to organisation studies and urban studies, that researchers use to investigate a topic. See the guide to Subjects or browse them.

Subjects are the interface between the catalogued research and the wider academic world. CM research does not work in isolation. It draws on established traditions and engages with them, and the relation is more than mere "borrowing". Concepts are not only applied but tested and developed through empirical work, and that work can feed back into the disciplines it engages. Because Subjects are named in the vocabulary those disciplines use, a reader who knows a term meets it under the name that its own field would recognize, and can follow it into the wider literature. The catalogue builds no explicit cross-reference. The shared vocabulary is what allows the connection to run in both directions.

Holding evidence and theory together

The best research in this field is both grounded in evidence and informed by theory. Much of it is gathered first-hand from a construction project, from real people and from directly observed activity. A great deal also draws on secondary data, and that work is held in equal regard. Whatever way the evidence is obtained, the research is directed by the body of theory it draws on for the concepts that it tests. Any field that studies practical human activity must deal with evidence and theory together. That is a demanding task, and a reason that the literature maybe difficult to organize.

Who is it for?

The catalogue is for anyone who needs to find applied research in this area without wading through everything that shares its everyday vocabulary. This includes researchers at every stage, junior or experienced, working inside the field or approaching it from another discipline. It includes students and doctoral candidates learning to place their work in a literature. And it includes practitioners, who often struggle to see the practical use buried in theoretically dense papers. The same obstacle stands in front of all of them, and the catalogue removes it. The catalogue does not do the most important work. Reading widely, judging quality and drawing the work together are the demanding parts of scholarship, and this catalogue leaves them untouched. What it removes is wasted effort in discovery. A reader who locates a paper but does not see which body of theory it engages misses part of what the paper is doing. Making that connection shows what has been studied and which traditions the research has worked with.

Context

Construction management as an academic field has a long history that may not be obvious. The literature goes back earlier than the journals that currently delineate the field. The context page sets out that background and explains why this catalogue is scoped as it is.
