Abstract
A remotely controlled pipe jacking system of microtunneling machine and hydraulic jacks is utilized to install 2,103 m (6,900 ft) of 1.52-m (5-ft) diameter interceptor sewer in Staten Island, N.Y. The sewer alignment is along a heavily traveled thoroughfare in Staten Island and passed through soils of glacial and cretaceous origin. This system of pipe jacking proves to be an effective alternate means of constructing sewers in heavily traveled, densely populated urban areas. Details of subsurface conditions, construction of receiving and jacking pits, and the pipe jacking system and its performance are herein described.
