Abeysinghe, G and Urand, D (1999) Why use enactable models of construction processes? Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, 125(6), pp. 437-447. ISSN 0733-9364
Abstract
Construction is a process-based industry. In such an industry it is important to have a clear understanding of the process. One way to achieve this is by the use of a process model. In a European Community funded research project the business process of a small U.K. construction comply was modelled and analyzed. Both visual modelling and enactable modeling techniques were used in this exercise. This paper aims to show how process understanding can be better achieved by a combination of visual models and enable models. This is supported by examples from the construction comply process studied. The tools and techniques used in this exercise are those developed by the collaborator of the project. The visual modelling is done using ProcessWise Workbench and Role Activity Diagrams. The view of the business process given by the ProcessWise WorkBench models is predominantly process based, whereas Role Activity Diagrams provide a role based view of the process. The enactable modelling is done using RolEnact, a modeling tool that enacts formal specifications of processes.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
