Abstract
Designers need to explore a great variety of knowledge in early design stages to successfully generate good design concepts. Each design solution opens new and possible more complex sub-spaces of design solutions, involving the use of experience and knowledge reasoning. As design evolves, it is possible to establish a methodological matrix comprising theories and rules for a successful design, so a knowledge-based system can be created for organizing and re-using design experience, to support conceptual design decisions along with certain performance requirements. Knowledge Based systems represent a combination of Artificial Intelligence techniques and Computer Aided Design technologies and its ultimate goal is to build computer-based interactive design environments in which a human designer and a knowledge system may cooperatively solve a design problem. This paper presents the initial stage of a project aiming at developing this learning-based computer tool for recalling previous successful design cases. This innovative computer databases used to model and implement design processes can play a key role to support creative design.
