A study of industrialised building systems with special reference to Turkey

Kosaner, Y (1979) A study of industrialised building systems with special reference to Turkey. PhD thesis, University of Manchester, UK.

Abstract

This thesis is principally concerned with the introduction of industrialised building systems for housing, in Turkey. The study first derives the major causes of failure and success in industrialised building systems, and defines recent approaches to systems from an investigation of the development of industrialised building in Europe, particularly in Britain. Secondly, a basis is established on which the aptness of industrialised building systems for Turkey can be revealed, along with the changes required in local conditions before the introduction of industrialised systems. Thirdly, the range of available industrialised building systems is explored from the designer's standpoint, and an assessment of the technological performance potential of competing systems is attempted. A major aim is to give assistance not only to systems designers and developers, but equally to official policy- makers, all of which are contemplating the possibilities of industrialised systems for housing, in Turkey. The work in this thesis is basically motivated by the repeated economic, financial, social, structural and architectural failures in the application of industrialised systems in the emerging countries, in the last two decades. The recent initiatives taken in Turkey, in the exploitation of industrialised systems, also stimulated this study. Industrialised systems are approached within the architectural system frame, consisting of design, construction and building sub-systems. In the light of the nature and objectives of industrialised building concept, the basic aspects of requirements associated with the construction sub-system are argued. These requirements are aligned with the potential characteristics of Turkey, on the basis of which the aptness of systems is revealed. With regard to the range of available building systems, a comprehensive classification of systems is developed. Later, a checklist is set and employed for the assessment of the technological performance potential of classified systems. In conclusion, in the light of the findings emerging in the main text, views are developed as to what the attitude should be in proceeding with industrialised systems in Turkey, accompanied by recommendations for future studies.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
