Abstract
This dissertation consists of the development of quantitative techniques to assist construction managers in the design (arrangement) of supportive facilities within the construction site. These techniques are based on modifications and applications of models and algorithms that exist within the operation research and facility layout and location literature. One procedure deals with location of a crane within a construction site and the results obtained not only provide a new approach to this problem but are also a contribution to the literature on the single-facility location problem. The crane location technique establishes the optimal crane location with respect to several construction supportive facilities. The technique is a normative mathematical model that considers radial and angular movement of construction materials. The second procedure, the quantitative construction layout technique, is a heuristic algorithm that seeks an "optimal" construction site layout solution based on the criterion that minimizing distance traveled reduces construction materials handling and transportation costs. Since the technique is a heuristic procedure, the final layout will not necessarily be optimal. A case study with results is provided.
