Abstract
This dissertation introduces a knowledge-based expert system approach to the construction site layout problem. Site layout as described in this research consists of locating temporary support facilities on a construction project site, while satisfying the applicable constraints. This problem involves the search for a feasible solution to a two dimensional, spatial arrangement where performance is a function of many factors, some of which are not quantifiable. A prototye system, CONSITE, has been developed to demonstrate the proposed approach. The development of CONSITE has resulted in the implementation of a system that embodies the heuristic, judgement and experience of experts in its knowledge base. This system can act upon user-specific problems and achieve a "satisfycing" solution. The major areas of interest in this research are: (1) elucidation of the knowledge that the expert brings to bear on the problem; (2) representation of the heuristic knowledge into the knowledge base; (3) representation of the spatial knowledge, topography of the site; and (4) specification of a search strategy and inference mechanism. CONSITE has been developed on a Texas Instrument Explorer, using the KEE environment. It uses a representation which is a mixture of rules, frames and object-oriented programming. CONSITE has been tested using realistic domain problems. The test results indicate that the knowledge-based expert system approach can be of great help to the inexperienced layout designer in terms of time saving and quality of the solution.
