Abstract

DYCAM provides the user with a computer tool to aid in the evaluation of conceptual system designs and the identification of feasible construction scenarios for these designs, assuming various types and levels of construction technologies. The DYCAM model has been designed to interact with a NASA utilized, commercially available computer model for conceptual system design, called IDEAS and a NASA proprietary analytical tool called IDEAS$\sp{**}$2 (ideas squared). This permits iteration of a system design with various alternative construction sequences suggested by the user. DYCAM also incorporates the consideration of construction constraints as specified by the mission planner/system designer. The DYCAM test case evaluated the feasibility of NASA's construction sequence for the configuration of Space Station Freedom (SSF) after two assembly missions using IDEAS data. The DYCAM system has been designed to assist the planner/designer in the interactive development of feasible construction plans. In doing this, DYCAM manages data, manages the interfaces between design and construction planning, performs bookkeeping chores on resource limitations, keeps track of project elements which are available for assembly, executes scheduling and analytical engineering routines, and presents graphic representations of the project as construction and assembly proceed. In designing DYCAM, we have recognized the fact that humans are good at synthesizing information and that computers are good at keeping score. DYCAM is a tool that leverages planner intelligence by providing the planner with a means to deal with the complexities involved in construction planning.
