Abstract
The purpose of this research is to provide a tool to those in the construction field to determine when to convert to the next generation of computer. This research will allow construction managers to sort out the question of when to convert to a new useable, effective, automation system. The study will use military engineer units, as a sample to study the effects of automation on construction organizations. Comparisons can be made to the private sector based on the finding of this military study population. The findings of this research will allow military and civilian construction entities to identify and implement automation change in a logical manner. The need to capitalize on computer usage is evident in the military units. The military is currently ending a down sizing period and has increased the number of missions it performs by three fold. Most of these missions entail military engineer units to be able to maximize labor effort to effectively conduct military engineer units to be able to maximize labor effort to effectively conduct the mission. With the increase in missions and the downsizing of the force the microcomputer becomes the tool of choice to increase productivity and thus important to maximize effectiveness. This study will determine at which point it is effective to convert to a new computer system for enhanced productivity in relation to the continued usage of a current system for the U.S. Army engineer manager. It is important to know when to convert to the next level of technology, as that change should be managed to prevent as much mystification as possible, with the objective of maximizing productivity. In this study, Army engineer units are used to conduct the study because of a high response rate of the study population. Computers are a driving force in productivity for the construction industry.
