Durability performance of advanced construction materials

Ekenel, M (2004) Durability performance of advanced construction materials. PhD thesis, University of Missouri - Rolla, USA.

Abstract

Despite the high technological improvements in construction science and technology, the life expectancy of civil structures still raise some questions because many of them become structurally deficient years before the end of their projected service life expectation. Some of the most significant reasons are improper material selections which have low resistance environmental conditions, inadequate and/or late inspection and insignificant maintenance. Consequently, the dissertation presented herein will develop a comprehensive understanding with regard to selection of proper materials with high durability and provide quantitative and objective information in damage detection. The projects will consists of (1) selection of advanced construction materials such as high-strength and high-performance concrete in order to improve long-term durability and therefore service life; (2) new innovations in inspection technologies including Microwave and Acousto-Ultrasonic for early inspection of durability related problems; (3) durability performance of recent rehabilitation techniques such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening and crack injection using epoxy based materials. The research results revealed that a proper optimization of local materials to produce high-performance and high-strength concrete improves the long-term durability. CFRP strengthening and crack injection using epoxy based materials are excellent sources of rehabilitation techniques; however, harsh environmental conditions may cause stiffness loss. New advances in Microwave Technology and Acousto-Ultrasonic Technique were proven to be an effective means for the investigation of detection of surface defects between CFRP and concrete substrate.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
