Abstract
The present design-construction information boundary is facing an unprecedented moment of self-evaluation. Global applications of building modeling—including virtual prototyping—factory-based component procurement, and industrialized site production present a combinative force poised to engulf the worn identity of traditional architecture, engineering and construction practices. Their professional facades will be inundated by a torrent of interoperability, integrative delivery methodology, and infinite informational domains. It is entirely possible that the force of this encounter could wash away the very language of traditional building culture. To prepare, this research proposes to identify and expose the most native aspects of built-project communications. It does so by examining the architectonic relationships that exist at the foundational level of building production—that is, about its assembly tasks. A work task and its assembly procedures are investigated using the programming interface of a Virtual Prototype (VP) modeling system. The graphical characterization it suggests are tested within for the ability to translate intended design and production information into building environments that typically resist digital manufacturing applications. The results of this investigation intend to identify a new communications format for building production. The graphical-interlingua it will suggest, may have the capacity to refresh the more insulate expressions and hollow specifications of traditional built-project design information.
