Abstract

The problem was that construction project manager's insufficient emotional intelligence (EI) abilities impacted their performance, resulting in a high rate of failures. Also, only a few studies have analyzed the influence of demographics on project manager's performance in the construction industry. The purpose of this research study was to determine the relationship between project manager's EI and their performance as measured by Project Timeliness (PT), Project Budget (PB), and Scope Creep (SC). Second, demographic variables were added to the model using moderator multiple regression (MMR) to determine if a greater percentage of the variance could be predicted. This non-experimental quantitative correlational predictive research study was significant because large construction projects failed because of a lack of EI competencies. Research questions determined whether there was a statistically significant relationship between EI and the project manager's performance. Also, using MMR analysis, find if demographic variables enhanced the prediction between EI and the project manager's performance. The population consisted of 1308 project managers who were members of a local project management organization in México. The sample size was 55. This study used a correlation, a SLR, and a MMR. The results confirmed that EI has a correlation of 0.297 with PT and a small 8.8% variability, which did not represent a causal relationship. Also, demographic variables did not enhance the prediction between EI and the project manager's performance. Leaders and practitioners should implement training in EI and AI, hire qualified project managers with EI backgrounds, measure EI during recruitment, and evaluate its proficiency.
