Abstract

Generally, effective BIM-based organizations align people, processes, technology, and data to meet clients' and stakeholders' goals. Recently, the abundance of cloud infrastructure advanced the trajectories of innovations through Cloud-based Building Information Modelling (CBIM) products and services. CBIM enterprises rely on effective and efficient business models like any other business. A holistic approach is essential to explore how such suitable business models allow incumbent firms to swiftly reinvent their businesses and startups to assess the market potentials of CBIM-related innovations. This dissertation addresses business model, innovation, and management of CBIM-based innovation from an organizational perspective. First, I applied a management framework and qualitative approach to harnessing experts' opinions. The research highlighted CBIM-business model types to achieve this goal, and the research begins with a systematic analysis of the CBIM business model. After that, I identified and explored changes to the foundational CBIM-business model design. Next, the research in this thesis implemented one of the change agents in the case-study organization to test the effect of information security on the competitiveness of the CBIM Prosumer organization.Throughout this research, I (1) identified and categorized fundamental and foundational CBIM business model types through a qualitative approach. The fundamental CBIM business models are the CBIM Producers and CBIM Consumers; the Producers make CBIM innovations while the Consumers use them. Producers have a monopoly of power, while Consumers experience an imbalance between efficiency and profitability; (2) addressed the efficiency-profitability paradox by exploring changes to foundation CBIM-business model types and introduced supplementary business model constructs such as strategic partnership, diversification, digital reskilling, sustainability, information security, cybersecurity, and pandemic; (3) test one of the newly identified business model constructs in a CBIM-based organization; (4) postulate testable hypothesis for both industry and academia on CBIM-business model; (5) contribute to grounded theory methodologies and literature. The thesis concludes with an emphasis on the CBIM-business model as a sociotechnical system by highlighting action areas around improving socio-political engagement and Business innovation in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industries, Prosumer Network, and individual business unit.
