Abstract
In Malaysia it is mandatory for all contracting firms to be registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) before they undertake to execute and complete any construction works. In addition, contracting firms participating in tenders and in construction for the public sector must register with the Pusat Khidmat Kontraktor or Contractors Service Centre (CSC). This paper reports on a study on the systems of registration of contracting firms in Malaysia. The outcomes of the study indicate that there are merits in having the dual systems of registration but maintaining the dual systems of registration lead to administrative red tape, ineffective use of resources and additional costs. The paper suggests that it would be more effective for the CIDB and the CSC systems of registration to be merged into one central registration system and performed by one single authority. The paper offers lessons for other countries on issues related to the system of registration of contracting firms.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
