Abstract
It is proposed that Darcy's law, as extended to unsaturated flow in soils, provides a rationale for the study of a variety of water movement processes occurring in the building fabric. The fundamentals of this approach are briefly reviewed. A detailed analysis of the state of capillary rise equilibrium in masonry walls and also of the time scale of capillary rise phenomena is presented. The movement of water during wet trade operations such as bricklaying and plastering is discussed.
