Abstract

Current research at Brunel University aims at a better understanding of the mechanisms of solid transport and deposition based on an analysis of the forces experienced by an isolated solid in an open channel flow. The variables considered in the research include pipe material, cross section size and shape, gradient, reduced W.C. flush volumes and waste solid size dot shape and simulating material. The results have shown that solid velocity is linearly dependent on root (l / g), the square root of the distance travelled over the pipe gradient, for a majority of pipe design applications. The paper reviews the main themes and conclusions of the research and outlines further work to incorporate these findings into design procedures.
