Abstract
The paper documents the most important criteria for measuring project performance as perceived by the clients, consultants, contractors in the Nigerian construction industry. A total of 120 questionnaires from professionals employed by clients' organisations, consultancy firms and contracting companies were used for the study. The questionnaire survey sought the opinion of the respondents on the importance of each of the 20 listed criteria in measuring project performance. Data analysis showed that the most important factors in order of importance were: (1) Building functioning as intended (2) Meeting client's satisfaction (3) Quality specification met (4) Satisfying intended users and customers (5) End results as envisaged (6) Client fulfils financial obligations (7) Safety performance (8) Building easy to operate and maintain (9) Completion on time and (10) Completion within cost. Contrary to expectation, construction cost and time are not regarded as highly important. In addition, there is no significant difference in the three industry practitioners' perceptions of importance of criteria for measuring project performance. In the light of these findings, relative importance indices for each of the ten most important criteria were computed to evaluate performance of completed projects.
