Abstract
Megaprojects, characterized by their immense scale and high levels of uncertainty, pose significant challenges for strategic management. In the context of the US Army, megaprojects are significant endeavors, associated with modernization efforts to enhance power projection capabilities. The problem addressed in this study is that megaprojects tend to be quite complex and present increased uncertainty compared to smaller projects (Bilgin et al., 2022). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the implications of complexity and uncertainty in transformational Army megaprojects on their strategic management and success. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, this research focused on Fort Friendly as a bounded case highlighting the complexity and uncertainty inherent in such megaprojects. Data for this study were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with professionals selected through maximum variation sampling involved in Fort Friendly’s megaprojects. Using complexity theory and complex adaptive systems theory as a framework, this study employed qualitative data analysis software to identify various factors influencing megaprojects. This study highlights the complexity of project management, emphasizing the interplay of various factors. To effectively manage projects, it's essential to consider these factors collectively rather than individually. Understanding the interconnected patterns of complexity is crucial for project success, especially in megaprojects. Project managers and stakeholders should prioritize grasping these patterns to enhance decision-making and project outcomes. Future research could delve into using advanced analytics and decision support tools to manage complexity in megaprojects, including feedback loops.
