Abstract

This thesis relies on the current literature, case studies, and a survey of early adopters of Construction Project Networks (CPNs) to develop an understanding of the interactions between the CPN technology and the underlying business processes of firms in the building industry. It extends existing theories of interorganizational process innovation into the building industry by identifying compatible reengineering strategies from other industries. It builds an empirical basis for a model implementation process for the adoption of CPNs. The implementation model accounts for differences in individuals, firms, and projects using CPNs. Part One describes the context for the research including an overview of the building industry and problems it faces in sharing design and construction information among firms, a technical and functional overview of the CPN and a discussion of the obstacles to the adoption of CPNs. Part Two builds a generalized CPN implementation model identifying potential process reengineering strategies for use with CPN implementation. Findings from the case studies and surveys are summarized into a series of recommendations that form the basis for a CPN implementation model. Finally, Part Three develops a framework for understanding the broader business transformation processes likely to occur in the organization, process, structure and IT support the building industry resulting from increasing use of CPNs and other interorganizational information systems.
