Abstract
This study is an analysis of the vital considerations for the design and construction of new student housing communities at colleges and universities. As enrollment and demand for higher education, particularly in California, continues to grow at significant percentages, the size of the student body is quickly approaching the capacity of the existing physical plant. This growth in enrollment creates an atmosphere of urgency for each campus as it assesses how it will provide academic and student services the existing facilities. The current supply of student housing at many campuses is falling well below demand due to surging enrollments. The time is now for chief housing officers and others responsible for student housing to begin intensely studying enrollment projections and how that will translate into housing demand. Several campuses throughout the country have already begun to construct new residential facilities, while numerous others are still exploring options. This study serves as a guide to provide chief housing officers who are facing design and construction issues for the first time with some key considerations they should be thinking about before and during the development of a new student housing community. This study explores the on-going student housing construction sites at three universities in California. Two of the campuses are public institutions and one is a private university. Faculty, staff, administrators, students, and architects working most closely with the project were interviewed about their experiences and beliefs. Interviews focused on obtaining key learnings to share with colleagues, as well as exploring in-depth evolving student desires like the increased need for privacy, safety, and technology. Campus needs were also explored including the desire for new student housing to serve as a student recruitment and retention tool, as well as its function as a summer conference center. Finally, the study explores successful strategies for incorporating academic affairs into the residential community. The results of the study provide recommendations in the following four categories: planning for potential design and construction, project design and development, strategies to involve various campus stakeholders, and ways to enhance academics through residential living.
