Abstract
Green building certifications and Building Information Modeling (BIM) are two main aspects in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry (AEC). This research intends to focus on the advanced capability of BIM by creating a BIM- Mostadam plug-in to help facilitate the green building certification in Saudi Arabia that supports its Vision 2030 blueprint. Furthermore, the work will determine whether BIM features can be used to execute sustainable design principles in existing and existing structures in Saudi Arabia. This is achieved by investigating the nature of the interaction that exists between BIM platforms and sustainability key performance indicators. The study aims to identify and promote market demand for improved methods to acquire green building certification, such as Mostadam in Saudi Arabia. The study suggests a new approach based on the integration of BIM and green building rating systems. The BIM-Mostadam plug-in can aid in achieving the KSA's 2030 envisioned sustainability goals and implement sustainability design principles in Saudi Arabia. Autodesk Dynamo is an add-in for Autodesk Revit that is used for programming and visualizing. The plug-in focuses on two main impact categories of Mostadam's Green building Rating System, which are water and energy. For the energy category, a minimum reduction in energy consumption of 15% should be achieved over the baseline. Whereas, for the water category a minimum reduction in water consumption of 20% is achieved over the baseline (Mostadam Manual, 2019). The number of green buildings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is very low compared with other developing countries, such as Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), India, and Brazil (USGBC, 2019). Due to KSA's desire to enhance its built environment, it established a new green building rating system named "Mostadam. " Mostadam was created and released in response to a need in Saudi Arabia for a local rating system that ensures sustainable construction standards. The issue is that international green building rating systems do not take into account regional differences. This is when local rating systems such as Mostadam come into play. Most international rating systems include technical criteria based on international or country-specific regulations or standards. Mostadam is tailored to Saudi Arabia's unique climatic and environmental factors in ways that other rating systems are not (Mostadam Green Building Rating System, 2020). There is a severe lack of green buildings in the KSA, and no current metric exists for measuring progress toward the goals of the KSA's 2030 Vision. The purpose of this research is to develop the BIM-Mostadam plug-in to help accelerate the green building certification process in the KSA that supports it's 2030 Vision. As a means of implementing sustainable design principles and working toward the sustainability goals envisioned for 2030, the proposed BIM-Mostadam plug-in aims to address key parts of the 2030 Vision in the KSA by bringing together BIM and green building rating systems. The methodology used in this study includes qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather data. A feasibility survey was sent to professionals in the (AEC) industry to investigate two fundamental questions in the BIM and Mostadam integration: 1) what Mostadam certification requires; and 2) what functionality BIM possesses to assist in compliance with such requirements. The BIM-Mostadam plug-in was created to handle practical problems at the credit level that might occur in actual Mostadam projects. Finally, case studies were utilized to validate the BIM-Mostadam plug-in. Due the limited number of green buildings in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, this study aimed to formulate a BIM-Mostadam plug-in to help facilitate the green building certification process in Saudi Arabia that supports the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's 2030 Vision.
