Abstract

The domestic construction industry is comprised of a union and a rapidly growing nonunion sector. The continuing deterioration of market share among construction unions has been attributed to a variety of causes, including the costs of union wages and benefits, and restrictive work rules that are perceived to hinder productivity. It is relevant to consider the labor-management relationship as a platform upon which unionized construction project success can be evaluated and improved. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the level of engagement of labor and management on unionized construction projects and the success achieved on those projects. The level of engagement of labor and management is defined as the intensity of the interaction between labor and management over the range of activities comprising their working relationship. Three hypotheses were formulated and two instruments were developed to test these hypotheses. Data were collected from seventeen completed or soon-to-be completed unionized construction projects around the United States. Results of the analysis show sufficient evidence to suggest a relationship exists between the level of engagement of a project's labor and management and the level of project success achieved.
