Construction data leaders’ descriptions of their organization’s analytics maturity

Hyatt, B A (2023) Construction data leaders’ descriptions of their organization’s analytics maturity. DBA thesis, Grand Canyon University, USA.

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how data leaders that support nonresidential construction companies in the United States describe the analytics maturity of their organizations. The study used the conceptual framework of Analytical Competition and included the three models of the Five Stages of Analytical Competition, the Four Attributes of Analytical Competitors, and the DELTA Plus to underpin the phenomenon of analytics maturity. The research questions explored how data leaders that support construction companies described their organization’s data analytics capabilities and progress in developing analytics maturity. The sample included twenty-one (21) construction data leaders that support nonresidential construction in the United States. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyze 21 questionnaire responses, 12 semi-structured interviews, and two focus groups (each with three participants). Thematic analysis identified three themes for the first research question, and two themes for the second research question. The study found data leaders’ descriptions of higher, lower, and growing capabilities for their organizations. Participants also described the connection between the participants’ descriptions of senior management’s commitment to analytics efforts and the focus on developing a distinctive capability to develop a competitive advantage. The findings advanced current knowledge of data analytics in the construction industry and the role of leaders in analytics capabilities and maturity. Recommendations for future research included case studies on highly mature construction organizations, quantitative studies on construction industry data capabilities, and the development of a construction-specific analytics maturity model.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
