Abstract

Since the early 60s there have been different techniques to schedule linear construction projects. But, for the most part, these have been overshadowed by the Critical Path Method. This emphasis on CPM has led to the development of resource leveling procedures for CPM while limited work has been done in the area of resource leveling for linear schedules. Recently, there has been renewed interest both in Linear Scheduling Methods and in adapting some of CPM's techniques to linear scheduling. The proposed research will develop a mathematical model using integer linear programming to level the resources of a linear schedule. Controlling activities will be determined using the Linear Schedule Model. Rate float, identified by the Controlling Activity Path, is used to free resources for leveling. Shifting of activities is also used to level resources. Two linear resource leveling objectives are used: Minimize the absolute sum of deviations from a desired resource rate and minimize the absolute sum of day-to-day change in resource use. Two or more resources can be leveled using a proposed weighting of resources. A highway construction project is used to test the method.
