Abstract
The future of sustainable buildings lies in a performance based approach at all stages of the building lifecycle. This thesis proposed such an approach using a Building Product Model to enable the documenting and communicating of performance data such that these data can provide value across the complete lifecycle of a building project, from planning through design and construction into occupancy and operation. Using this methodology it is proposed to both specify and track the energy performance of the "to be constructed" Environmental Research institute (ERI) in University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. This thesis describes the development of an Information Communication Technology (ICT) framework that provides a platform for integrating existing software tools at design, construction and operation of buildings so that monitoring and control of performance at all stages of the building lifecycle can be achieved. The framework will be known as the BEMAC (Building Energy Monitoring Analysis Controlling) Framework. The BEMAC framework comprises a Building Project Model, a Building management System, existing software tools and other standards and technologies that combine to allow monitoring, analysis and control of building performance, with regard to energy usage. The BEMAC framework is developed in accordance with the principals of standardisation and open systems such that it is extensible and applicable to other buildings in the future. A prototype implementation of the BEMAC framework is described in this thesis using the existing Mardyke Sports Arena in University College Cork.
