Abstract

Environmental simulations have played an important role in decision-making in environmental planning, designing, and management endeavors as tools for assessing the potential impact due to a proposed plan or design. Among the diverse simulation methods available, computer-based simulations which have developed remarkably in recent years suggest useful approaches to simulation. However, the value of computer simulations remains largely unquantified and needs to be systematically evaluated. In order to appraise computer simulation methods, several research questions and hypotheses were established. This research focused on four types of computer simulation methods--i. e. wire frame, surface model, combination of surface model images with scanned photographic images, and image processing--which were becoming common in practice. Applying them to an actual, on-going building/site construction project, the effectiveness and validity of the computer simulation methods were explored. Two different approaches were used in the appraisal: (1) the evaluation of functional and technical dimensions of the simulation methods and (2) the analysis of human perceptual responses to simulated images. The first approach primarily employed evaluation criteria such as functions, economy, and ease of learning and using. This evaluation was based on expert judgement as well as objective data. In the second approach, observers evaluated simulations and actual images of the post-construction project site. Collected data were then statistically analyzed. In this analysis, visual perception of the four types of simulations were investigated in terms of different image abstractions and observer characteristics. Based on analyses of the two approaches, the usefulness of computer simulation methods in environmental planning and design are discussed. None of the methods satisfied all criteria. Each simulation method has, however, a particular value, and is beneficial for certain aspects of the environmental planning and design process. Therefore, the use of simulation methods relevant to each situation is recommended. In addition, ways of further developing computer simulations are discussed.
