Abstract
The goal of this research is to develop an integrated framework for the operational simulation of construction projects. To illustrate the concepts introduced, we choose a demonstration in earthmoving operations. The proposed framework is comprised of the following components: Site Data, Volume Calculation, Site Graphics, Simulation, Knowledge Base and Control Modules. Since volume calculation results are an important input in earthmoving operations, the use and adaptation of triangulation as a powerful tool is presented. Emphasis is placed on treating the simulation system as an integrated unit, where site changes through simulation affect the performance parameters governing the simulation model. The behavior of the model through simulation is displayed with the aid of computer graphics and animation. Animation was used to portray a dynamic representation of the construction site and resources through time. The main advantage achieved through the use of computer graphics is the increased communication between the members of the construction team. This is because, in the simulation model, graphical elements used for model representation (e. g. trucks and loaders) resemble those actually used, thereby creating a realistic interaction medium. The concepts introduced in this research can be utilized in a wide variety of applications such as Paper Milling, Heavy Industries and Combat Simulation in Military Operations.
