Pontikis, K L (1998) Apartment building process: The design and construction of the korinthos apartment building in Cyprus. PhD thesis, University of California, Berkeley, USA.
Abstract
For the last seven years I have undertaken to investigate and implement design, construction, and construction management processes, which attempt to create a harmonious and humane built quality on the apartment building form. This dissertation documents my attempt to create such an apartment building quality and presents the processes, which I have investigated, devised and implemented, on a real apartment building project. The apartment building, which I designed and built with the use of these processes, is the Korinthos Apartment Building in Nicosia, Cyprus. It is a four-story building, which includes three floors of apartments and a subterranean parking. The layout of most apartments was performed with the participation of their owners, who were actively involved in the decision-making process during the construction of the building and helped to create their own built environment. The main aim of my work, therefore, is to establish an apartment building process, which is capable of creating dwellings with an increased “feeling of ownership and belonging” to its inhabitants. My hypotheses are: (1) That a dynamic apartment building process which allows the subtle and consecutive adaptations of the building form during construction has the ability to create a harmonious apartment building with an increased feeling of belonging to its inhabitants. (2) This dynamic apartment building process can be implemented without increasing the allocated construction cost and time of the building. It is my hope that this work increases the understanding of the processes which are needed to create a harmonious built environment, at both the intellectual and practical levels, and make such an endeavor easier to undertake.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
