Abstract

As an exploratory examination of knowledge, this embedded case study examined the heavy industrial construction industry, senior leadership, leader learning behavior, leader-member and team member exchange, and psychological safety. This researcher’s use of an embedded case study design provided the ability to sample an adequately representative sample of organizations within the heavy industrial construction industry as a test population. The purpose of this embedded case study was to quantitatively determine the extent to which construction industry leaders are designing psychologically safe work environments, as well as to qualitatively understand construction leadership elements and each element’s impact on the design of psychological safety into an organization. As such, this study incorporated three areas for measurement and analysis, psychological safety workplace satisfaction survey results, three senior leaders, and reflective field walk observations. First, this study was conducted to understand the importance for organizations to provide educational or training opportunities to leaders, surrounding inclusiveness and transformative leadership, leading toward an enhanced psychologically safe work environment. Second, this study was conducted to evaluate mental health as a systemic concern within the heavy industrial construction industry and recognizing that the lack of psychological safety may play a part in the industry. With the heavy industrial construction industry moving at an expedited tempo of change, complexities, and disruptions, LMX and TMX adaptive responses, development in leader cognitive skills, leader training, and championing PsyS will be a necessity moving into the future of construction.
