Abstract

Because construction projects are rarely built exactly as shown on the original contract drawings, most construction contracts require that as-built drawings be prepared to reflect construction modifications. Although these drawings are very important to facilities operation and maintenance personnel, producing accurate as-built drawings has been a persistent problem in the construction industry. This research investigates integrating computer vision with three dimensional computer aided design (CAD) for producing as-built drawings. The feasibility of this concept is demonstrated by overlaying a 3D CAD perspective image with a processed digital camera image of the same construction scene. Calibration targets are placed in the construction scene to establish the relationship between 3D world coordinates of objects and the corresponding 2D image coordinates. This relationship is expressed by a matrix of camera parameters which is used to determine the camera orientation and position and generate an image of the CAD model with the same perspective as the digital image. The overlay is evaluated by comparing the positions of targets located in the CAD image with targets located in the digital image. By overlaying processed digital images with perspective images of the 3D CAD model, the actual construction can be compared to the original design. This will permit the CAD user to identify differences and update the 3D CAD model.
