Talton, V (2023) Examining the relationship between culture and the construction labor shortage: An explanatory case study. DBA thesis, Northcentral University, USA.

Abstract

The recruitment and retention of a younger demographic within the construction industry has become a developing issue since that demographic is straying away from the industry. The problem that is addressed in this qualitative research study, that there is a recruitment problem in the United States of America and a retention problem that follows. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the potential interest in the construction industry and the current or possible technology in the construction industry to assist companies or firms in creating a recruitment tool to hire a younger demographic and increase retention rates. The conceptual framework supports a relationship between the potential interest in the construction industry and the current or possible technology in the construction industry. While the research methodology is a phenomenological qualitative research study and the design is an explanatory case study. The results of this study display a relationship does exist between the construction industry current or possible technology and the recruitment and retention rates of a younger demographic. Technology is something that can improve recruitment rates of a younger demographic, and over time the retention rates among a younger demographic will improve. The future research with this study, as a foundation, would pave a road of new opportunities for this industry.

Descriptive scope: 5 PCTEA

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
