Abstract

This study empirically investigated risk factor interrelationships across life cycles associated with success criteria. This was accomplished by investigating the relationship between the occurrence of risk factors associated with defining success criteria in the early phase and the occurrence of risk factors in the operational phase of construction projects in Small to Medium Enterprises. This research study surveyed 111 project managers to investigate the relationship between the six early phase risk factors (incompleteness, narrowness, diversity, not ranking, being unrealistic, and ambiguity) and the three operational phase risk factors (lack of commitment of resources, lack of alignment, and changing context). On the basis of statistical correlation, the six risk factors of incompleteness, narrowness, diversity, not ranking, being unrealistic, and ambiguity in the early phase of projects, if occurring, may complicate the operation phase due to the statistically significant relationship with the occurrence of the risk factor lack of commitment of resources. Additionally, the five risk factors of incompleteness, diversity, not ranking, being unrealistic, and ambiguity in the early phase of projects, if occurring, may complicate the operation phase due to the statistically significant relationship with the occurrence of the risk factor lack of alignment. Finally, the six risk factors of incompleteness, narrowness, diversity, not ranking, being unrealistic, and ambiguity in the early phase of projects, if occurring, may complicate the operation phase due to the statistically significant relationship with the occurrence of the risk factor changing context.
