Leite Júnior, José Agnaldo Pereira (2016) Analysis of the quality of work life applications in the construction industry. PhD thesis, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil.
Abstract
The construction industry has undergone transformations due to the economic globalization, increase in competition, new technologies, new work methods and processes, sustainability values, flexibility of labor relations, among others. In Brazil, the sector demands large number of workers, who are often recruited in other states, housed in precarious accommodations, away from the family, under sub-human working conditions and with no guarantee of employment continuity, which may affect their health and performance. In this context, the organizational commitment with the management of the quality of work life – QWL can contribute to the improvement of practices, processes, physical environment, work relationships, among other aspects which can contribute to the improvement of life conditions at work and bring satisfaction and well-being to the workers. The objective of this research is to identify the level of satisfaction with the work and the functional aspects that affect the quality of life of workers in the construction sector. This research was carried out with a sample of 244 workers from 4 companies from the Brazilian civil construction, based in Campinas- SP, Caçapava-SP, Lorena-SP, São José dos Campos-SP, and Rio de Janeiro-RJ. The instrument Job Diagnostic Survey - JDS. Statistical analysis of the socio-demographic and QWL data was performed by Sphinx® software. As for the indicators of QWL, it was noted that the categories linked to intrinsic factors were evaluated more positively than the categories linked to extrinsic factors and that intrinsic factors are related to the ability to perform, which provide psychological development and bring satisfaction and well-being to the individual. The Satisfaction with Supervision is related to the Extrinsic Feedback and to the Knowledge of the Real Work Results, and were evaluated more negatively, which shows that there are problems with supervision in the construction sector. The Job Motivational Potential is significantly higher for more skilled workers, with higher levels of education, and also assessed more positively the Autonomy they have at work. It is hoped that these results can show the current state of QWL, as perceived by the sample of workers participating in the research, produce knowledge in the area, assist companies and managers in the development of QWL policies and programs and bring collective benefits to the construction industry, through the improvement of QWL management

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
