Abstract
Construction site layout planning (CSLP) should be approached as an optimization problem, aiming to determine the optimal arrangement of temporary facilities, construction equipment, and efficient pathways. Although advanced approaches such as mathematical models and computational algorithms have been proposed to optimize site layouts, in practice, this aspect is often overlooked or treated as secondary. Frequently, site elements are arranged in an improvised manner, based on their order of arrival or the professionals' prior experience. Traditionally, these methods have been preferred by professionals due to their simplicity and flexibility compared to more complex automated solutions. To address these challenges, this research proposes directly involving decision-makers in the site layout planning process. The approach combines a knowledge-based rule method with optimization techniques, under the premise that this ensures more effective solutions. Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) is utilized as a method to effectively plan the arrangement of facilities in the manufacturing industry, applying rules to assess the need for proximity between facilities. Additionally, Building Information Modeling (BIM) provides a suitable framework to support the decision-making process. Using Design Science Research, this study aims to propose a method to optimize decision-making in construction site layout and logistics planning (MOTD), aiming to reduce distances associated with non-value-adding activities. MOTD integrates automation with professional expertise, enabling the rapid generation of multiple layout options directly within a BIM model. Proximity relationships between site elements are determined based on workflow intensity, safety concerns, and managerial preferences. An indicator measures the efficiency of the solution by calculating the percentage reduction in traveled distances, comparing the optimized layout to those implemented by managers. Exploratory case studies have demonstrated the simplicity and effectiveness of the method, showing its contribution to reducing non-value-adding distances and improving construction site layout and logistics planning.
