Sustainability in the construction industry from the perspective of leadership

Araujo, Alexandre Jose Vianna Barbosa de (2015) Sustainability in the construction industry from the perspective of leadership. PhD thesis, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil.

Abstract

In recent years, the construction industry regained its strategic role in the economy. For the development of the sector continues, it is necessary to understand how sustainability can become a viable way for these organizations through their leadership and their roles in the process of incorporation of the theme in the management system for sustainability. This PhD thesis is then proposed to understand how leaders develop management systems for the sustainability of these organizations, and generate guidelines that can help other companies to also incorporate aspects of sustainability, taking into account the specificities and challenges of the sector. To this end, it was opted for a qualitative, descriptive and explanatory study through interviews with ten case studies. The themes embraced by the interviews were: the concept of sustainability; the direction the leadership gave the theme; the alignment performed internally and maintaining the commitment. The results suggest that there are some trends in the incorporation of the theme into business management, but that organizations in the sector are still struggling to show results brought to sustainability and engage customers and regulators in the proposed processes. Management for sustainability in the sector needs - beyond the clear direction; alignment and maintenance of commitment by senior management - finding initiatives that can bring clear and immediate results, and a communication planning and dialogue with stakeholders since the design of these initiatives.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
