Abstract

The construction industry possesses a wealth of advanced construction management knowledge and methods that have shown success within projects and have the potential to improve industry-wide productivity. However, the industry faces a gap in knowledge sharing and dissemination due to its untransferable nature, lack of systematic decision-making support, and the soft and abstract nature of the knowledge and skill sets. In light of the background, this dissertation aims to investigate strategic approaches to accelerate the sharing and dissemination of construction management knowledge and methods to promote widespread adoption and contribute to the productivity improvement of the industry. This dissertation has three objectives to achieve the research aim. First, the research identifies similarities and dissimilarities across construction sectors and suggests ideal paths for knowledge and methods sharing and dissemination. The research collects and analyzes project risk registers from various construction sectors to validate empirical knowledge of different project risk profiles across different sectors and assist project participants and stakeholders in adopting advanced project planning, delivery, and management strategies while accounting for different risks. Second, the research proposes and validates a reliable and practical risk-based decision-making framework for prioritizing construction management knowledge and methods. An industry-wide questionnaire survey responses give insight into the framework, and it is validated through case study projects. This framework provides guidance to project participants who may be inexperienced or skeptical about adopting advanced knowledge and methods. Third, the research suggests innovative education and training approaches to improve the effectiveness of sharing and disseminating construction management knowledge and methods. This includes developing and testing two technology-driven formats of serious games and simulations, including computer-based and virtual reality-based formats. These formats maximize imparting soft and abstract construction management principles and methods to the industry. The findings of this research will contribute to the body of knowledge by examining ways to facilitate knowledge sharing and dissemination in the construction industry with various strategic approaches. Ultimately, they will promote the widespread adoption of advanced construction management knowledge and methods and improve the productivity of the construction industry.
