Abstract
This research has been conducted to explore the major challenges in the 'building & operating' of Data Centers (DC) and to conduct an in-depth examination to arrive at practical solutions to optimize, formulate and recommend the best practices for design, construction, and Operations and maintenance (O & M) of Datacenters. Through in-depth study, the researcher understands that today there are no standard practices/solutions available for building and operating a DC and the main challenge is that there is a different set of vendors for design, construction, and operations, which is very complex. No single equipment manufacturer or merchant can handle it all. Long lead times and intricate supply chain management (SCM) processes are predominantly in conflict with each other everywhere. In this DC industry, there are mainly five unique types of DCs, however, services remain comparable. Building and equipment sizes vary immensely; the area of Datacenters DCs varies from 1000 square feet to 200,000 square feet. DCs are in dire need of space to expand, and this is costing them valuable opportunities, DC business must grow and always be ahead of cloud business. One astounding fact is, remarkably DC business is ripe for disruption, therefore this research program.Results of Research and Summary of Conclusions: Establishing a DC is a significantly complex task, 60% of the Datacenters are inefficient and unsustainable. Therefore, stakeholders have questions concerning the efficiency, profitability, and sustainability of the DC. The solutions are within the process of bringing up a DC facility. The project team, involved in all the stages of establishing the DC, must explore probable solutions within the whole process of each DC project without comparing it to other DC projects. The entire team must provide seamless support, guidance, communication and be successful in bringing up and running the facility. Today DCs are engines of growth. If data is not secured, accessed, and retrieved at the crucial junctures, in today's society, everything will come to a standstill."In a nutshell, a DC must be sustainable, stable and secure in all respects" The main theme must be the ease of doing business, leading sustainability, and lower energy consumption. Unplanned downtime is the perennial number one scourge for the DC industry. This can be curtailed, when all the stakeholders of this industry/business come together to discover a permanent solution.
