Haji-Metussin, Haji-Abdul Manaf (2000) Organisational changes related to the adoption of ISO 9000 and their significance for the pursuit of total quality management: A study of the process of ISO 9000 adoption in Brunei darussalam construction related industry. PhD thesis, University of Kent, UK.
Abstract
ISO 9000 Quality Management System and Total Quality Management are two widely accepted quality initiatives. Although both initiatives are designed to promote quality in an organisation, they have different foci and methods of adoption. This research used the McKinsey's 7 'S' framework as a framework for investigating the organisational changes related to ISO 9000 adoption in an organisation. It examined the impact of ISO 9000 adoption on the organisation's strategy, structure, management, style, system, staff, skills and shared values. The significance of these organisational changes for the pursuit of TQM is also discussed. This thesis identifies changes associated with ISO 9000 that are positive, negative or neutrally supportive of TQM. It concludes that if TQM is the long term goal, this should be borne in mind during the ISO 9000 adoption. Otherwise, additional changes may be required to overcome some of the dysfunctional effects of ISO 9000 for TQM.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
