Abstract

It is widely recognised that construction activities around the world generate large amounts of waste each year. These wastes not only squander limited natural resources but also consume large amounts of landfill space while polluting the environment and harming society. Advances in science and technology have changed the way construction and demolition waste (CDW) is managed, and building information modelling (BIM), as a powerful technology that records building information, has great potential for waste management. Although many scholars have produced effective overviews of BIM and construction waste management, none have revealed the different trends in approaches and strategies related to CDW management before and after the adoption of BIM, nor how BIM and CDW management can be effectively combined, nor the advantages and constraints of this nexus. To address these gaps, a systematic overview of BIM applications for CDW was conducted. The siting of construction waste disposal facilities is an important part of a construction waste recycling strategy, and ignoring uncertainties can lead to inaccurate and inappropriate site selection. Two uncertainties - waste supply and transportation costs - are the focus of this study. Based on the traditional nominal facility siting modelling approach and considering the uncertainty of two parameter intervals, a new robust facility siting model was developed using hybrid programming in CPLEX and MATLAB. The results show that the cost of supply uncertainty for construction waste transfer stations and transportation has a significant effect on the total cost of waste disposal, and that the total cost is more sensitive to changes in waste supply than to transportation cost uncertainty. As the values of the uncertainty level parameter combinations increase, the optimal total cost also increases, with the rate of change slowing progressively. The optimal cost of the layout of the construction waste transfer station collection and disposal facility was determined using Guangzhou City as a case study. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on waste and solid waste management by revealing trends in CDW management before and after the application of BIM technology, and by providing a scientific and effective method for the location of construction waste disposal facilities that considers multiple uncertain factors.
