Multicultural attitudes of construction management students in a rural southern university

Martin, Clinton D (2015) Multicultural attitudes of construction management students in a rural southern university. EdD thesis, Georgia Southern University, USA.

Abstract

Construction management students are situated in a predominantly white male industry. Since the industry is currently becoming more diverse, there is a need for construction management students to be more culturally responsive. Multicultural education is one way that students can be exposed to diverse cultures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of a critical multicultural education curriculum on the multicultural attitudes of construction management students in a higher education construction management program. This research study used a survey instrument along with classroom observations, field notes and a research diary to measure the effectiveness of a 3 day multicultural education intervention in construction management students' attitudes toward cultural diversity. The results suggest that the intervention was successful at positively changing the measured attitudes of construction management students. Future construction management programs might consider implementing a form of multicultural education into their curriculum in order to positively influence students' attitudes toward diversity.

N.B. Descriptive scope is a count of how many of the five facets of empirical research are indicated by the words used in title, abstract and keywords. It is not intended as a judgement on the research; merely a count of the kind of word we would expect to indicate Phenomenon, Concepts, Theoretical framing, Empirical techniques, Analytical techniques. If all five are present, then a code of “5 PCTEA” will indicate this. If you feel the coding for this record is questionable, we welcome discussion around the terms we matched or the way we categorized them. The facet you would expect may not be coded, or a facet may be coded inappropriately. This can also bear on a larger question, of which facets should be treated as defining in construction management research. Please get in touch, and we will look at it. More details here
