Abstract

The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in construction projects has been increasingly popular the last years. BIM has penetrated into the professional routines of numerous multi-disciplinary stakeholders. For example, not only architects and structural engineers but also the client, contractors and suppliers have included BIM in their work routine. However, the business models of the various professionals are unevenly affected by BIM technology. During the BIM-based collaboration, the actors present different levels of BIM use, and this might result in further fragmentation of the existing practices and barriers among professionals. This paper aims to investigate the perceptions of the project stakeholders as to their emerging BIM-related roles. Using an empirical research approach, the roles of the professionals were explored as to both technology-centred and organisational-centred perspectives. The data were collected from in-depth interviews with twelve multi-disciplinary participants of a project with BIM-based collaboration from Initiation to Construction phase. The interviewees were asked to reflect on their roles in the BIM-based project and compare it to their roles in traditional projects. Apart from reflecting on their roles, the interviewees were encouraged to reflect on the emerging and traditional roles of their collaborators. The roles were analysed as to the domain-specific expectations and the BIM-related behaviours expected from the partners. The findings revealed various BIM-related roles among the multi-disciplinary stakeholders as well as some mismatches on their perceptions. The research investigated the emergence of changing roles due to BIM and their implications for construction management. The study uncovered mismatches in the perception of roles in three aspects: BIM-related knowledge, BIM-enabled collaboration and inter-organisational issues, e.g. trust and collaboration duration. Acknowledging the different perceptions of BIM-related roles could regulate the BIM implementation process. Successful BIM implementation requires a balance of not only domain and BIM-related knowledge but also collaboration and inter-organisational aspects.
