Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is one of the latest tools, which develops a digital platform for construction work. With the current technological advancements, the information generated during construction of a built asset has gained a long life span.  Therefore and due to the unlimited other capabilities bring in through BIM for construction projects, it is necessary to understand the long term use of the construction information to make an effective and efficient use of information and BIM.With a pragmatic stance, this paper aims to reveal the value of construction information during facility management. The research adopted a qualitative approach to capture the broader idea within different stakeholders engaged in the building information requirement identification to its use during facility management. The data was collected through literature review and interviews were undertaken among real estate professionals to identify the employer information requirement. Although there are advance guidance towards BIM practices, there is a reluctance among practitioners to make a complex change without any practical experience with BIM. With that, the findings revealed the knowledge gap of a much simple strategy to make the choice of which construction information to be stored in the BIM process for facilities management purposes.Based on qualitative analysis, the construction information value graph is developed. This graph will guide the client and facilities managers to understand the information requirement at the early stages of a building project. The findings explain that people tend to demand for considerably high volume of information based on the idea of positive contribution towards value with the increased amount of information in hand. Also it was noted that cost of information is not clearly visible and therefore no clear understanding towards the total value addition done through construction information to facilities management.
