Abstract

Abstract Rail is one of the most important types of a transportation system in any society.  Indeed, the continuous upgrading of this sector is needed to respond to technological advances, environmental change and increased customer demands. This research focuses on the design stage of rail projects due to the significance of this phase. It includes very crucial decisions that have an important influence on cost, time and quality. Cost and time can be saved through avoiding rework, clash detection, making better decisions and providing better tools to visualise the project effectively. Quality can be improved by better controlling the design process,  integrating new technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographic Information systems (GIS) to provide a collaborative environment is a potential promising solution to tackle these problems. Research has shown that collaboration can lead to better decision-making, knowledge and skills exchange, easy information access and more balanced sharing of risks and responsibilities. This integration offers a comprehensive platform for better collaboration especially given the increasing adoption of these technologies and mandate for using BIM in countries such as the UK. BIM can help to improve collaboration, however, the scope of BIM usually does not extend beyond the footprint of the “building”; it does not provide geospatial data. Therefore, integrating BIM with GIS provides a complete picture of the project and enhances collaboration which is necessary for any project. This paper will review literature in collaboration, BIM, and GIS in order to provide a basis for integrating BIM with GIS and determining the role that this integration can play in the design stage in railway projects. It is concluded that BIM-GIS integration offers a promising opportunity to improve collaboration and enhancing information sharing. The expected ultimate outcome is better decision-making, leading to savings in cost and time.
