Abstract
The concept of 'Information Technology (IT) Productivity Paradox' refers to the situation when significant investments on information technology do not lead to meaningful improvements at industry-level productivity measurements. The concept has been widely debated in 1980s and 1990s, thus leading to valuable insights regarding the potential reasons of such a paradox and the ways forward for enabling measurable productivity gains deriving from digitalisation. Building upon the insights enabled by that debate, this paper undertakes a systematic literature review of the construction management literature on digitalisation in order to explore whether and why an I.T. productivity paradox is being experienced in the construction industry. Reviewing the publications from the last ten years in two major construction management journals, the paper aims to shed some light and generate debate on some of the key issues relating to construction productivity in digital era. Although limited in its scope and extent, the paper enables fresh insights regarding both productivity improvement and digitalisation agendas of the construction industry.
