Abstract

Sustainable site selection is considered the first step in the design making process for sustainable buildings. Green building rating systems such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) include guidance in these regards within two categories; 'Location and transportation' and 'Sustainable Sites'. These tackle context and site related aspects, respectively. It is noted that this problem is of qualitative nature, yet the point scoring mechanism allows performing quantitative analysis. Nevertheless, the intrinsic synergies between these categories to achieve less energy consumption, water use, promoting the use of green materials and resources as well as providing better indoor environmental quality is unexploited which represents a main gap in existing literature. Accordingly, this study formulates data related to buildings' performance, then the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) overlaying and mapping features are used to explore and quantify these synergetic relations for an informed decision-making process. The methodology is applied to new city development areas in Egypt to set an objective base for site selection. This provides valuable research output for the academic and industry outreach.
