Abstract

The energy-intensive character of the current reliance on air-conditioning suggests the need for a different approach to comfort and new designs to achieve it. It is argued that there are multiple paths to personal comfort, and that residential design in a lower carbon society should provide flexible spaces for achieving personal cooling and comfort as adjuncts to mechanical systems. Of particular importance are residential gardens. In the post-war period, landscape architects developed designs for functional or social gardens that presented new ideas about the relationship of gardens to both people and houses.
